What do you all think of Catherine's attitude towards David having autism? I think that she is very negative and she just wants a "normal" brother because she gets embarrassed by him and she doesn't want that sort of attention. In the story it says "But here's what i understand: everyone gets invited except us and it's because of David" which proves that she does get penalized because of David. I realized that I would probably act similar to Catherine because we both would like to feel accepted among our friends and family and when you have a close relative that has autism it is hard to feel like that. I think that later in the book Catherine might learn that she has a brother with autism and there is nothing she can do about it because she says "Sometimes you have to work with what you have." and this shows that she should accept that life isn't fair and move on.

i agree but maybe she should think about a brother without autism she is so used to david a regular brother would probly seem overwelming Because he would never insult her or make fun of her because David doesn't think like that. He thinks of life you know? She would wonder what is happening and I know that MY brother hurts me physicly and emotionally almost 24/7 then there's the time where he doesn't and i enjoy that then it turns out he's sick. So then i can feel like Catheren because then all the attention is on Him (like david)

I agree with sarah partially, i feel that she loves her brother! but she is frustrated constantly by him and it is very hard for her to lead a normal life with a brother with autism. i feel like sometimes i hate my brother but really inside, i love him! we may love each other but we all have different ways of expressing it. for example me and my brother sometimes have " play fights" where i would attempt to beat him up ( with an epic fail because he is 19 and i, only 11) but that would be out way of expressing our love! for example i think that Catherine makes the rules not only to keep his pants on, ( :) ) but to express that she loves him and that she cares about his well being.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Ellen that I would act that way towards an autistic brother.He would get ALL the attention!!I think that Catherine is jealous,because on page 15 Catherine keeps asking her mommy if she can do something with her but her mom says,"David had a hard time last week.I need to make sure Stephanie can handle it.Why don't we read?" If I were Catherine,I would storm out of the room crying, screaming,"I HATE YOU!"not because I actually hated my mommy,but because I just wanted to do something fun,a girl thing.

ReplyDeleteWhat a difficult conversation you have all begun? It is hard to determine whether having a so called "normal" sibling versus a so called "different" sibling is better or worse. I think the answer is there are benefits to both. I think David would bring a really special point of view into Catherine's life and that she may not always appreciate this point of view.
However, I am sure there are moments where maybe Catherine would rather not have to do with it. What do you think would be special about knowing someone or having a family member that has a different point of view on the world? How do you think would make your life more interesting than the lives of others?
I love that you are having this conversation. It is a great way to begin and important discussion about the content of this novel.

ReplyDeletebut I also think that Catherine is patiant enough to be a sister of David because she acually spends time him and teaches him rules.
I don't think david makes fun of her like MY brother does I mean everything i say he trys to make fun of I also 'PLAY FIGHT' with my brother except that eventually it really starts to hurt but you can't say get off because then they think they've won! I don't think david is llike this (ellen). I think he thinks a different way he thinks he can get what ever he wants BUT if he doesn't get it he will except that
